The City School of Architecture (CSA), Colombo, proudly completed a successful five-day study tour to Bangkok, Thailand, from September 29th to October 4th, 2024. This marks the continuation of the annual study tour after a four-year hiatus, with the last tour taking place in 2019 before being disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges. This long-awaited tour is a crucial part of the curriculum for Part II – Year 1 & 2 (Year 5 & 6) Post-Graduate students, offering them a valuable opportunity to broaden their understanding of global architectural trends while observing social values and behavioral patterns in a diverse cultural setting.
Accompanied by Senior Lecturer Archt. Chiranthi Indika Warusawitharana, the students immersed themselves in Bangkok’s vibrant architectural scene, exploring a mix of traditional and contemporary structures. The journey provided valuable insights into the intricate relationship between architecture and society, highlighting the innovative yet culturally rooted approaches within Thai architecture.
It enables them to broaden their outlook, learn about life in other countries, and study and appreciate the design of modern architecture and technology not available in Sri Lanka. This immersive experience not only enriches their academic journey but also reconnects them with a vital tradition of global engagement, preparing them to engage with contemporary architectural practices and cultural diversity in a post-pandemic world.
Students returned enriched and inspired, bringing back fresh perspectives that will undoubtedly influence their future projects. This tour underscores CSA’s commitment to providing its students with a holistic educational experience, preparing them to be thoughtful and dynamic architects in a globalized world.
